solids are a state of matter with a definite shape and definite volume. the particles in a solid are packed tightly together and can only vibrate in place. because the particles cannot move freely, solids keep their shape unless a strong force is applied.
solid particles have low kinetic energy and strong attractions between them. this is why solids are hard and not easily compressed.
